Kapuku (Kapukan: 카푸쿠), officially the Kingdom of Kapuku (Kapukan: 아우푸니 카푸쿠, Aupuni Kapuku), is a kingdom situated in the Kapukan Archipelago. Located in the middle of the Hanmaric Ocean. Kapuku has no land borders with any other nation and comprises of four major islands - Ulukau, Limoni, Hulawa, and Haumea - alongside smaller islands that together form the Kapukuan archipelago. With the nation itself being home to around 7 million residents, its capital and largest city is Lono.

Archaeological evidence show that the Kapukan Archipelago was first settled in the 300s AC by South Sea Islanders originating from Kobi island in Sakaro. The early Kingdom of Limoni united the archipelago for over a century until the death of king Kei Kealoha and the division of the islands into four separate kingdoms. These four kingdoms went on to fight for centuries in what is known as the Warring Period, an era that also saw great cultural and military progress in the archipelago. In 1057 AC, Meakhani united the islands but they soon were ravaged due to disease brought from Zhenian traders. The islands soon collapsed and became a tributary of the Shindan dynasty and later a crown dependency of the Empire of Zhenia. While the islands were annexed into Zhenia shortly before the Second Great War, a rebellion that initiated in 1533 AC ultimately resulted in Kapukan independence three years later. The nation was reestablished as a constitutional monarchy that still lasts to this day

Today, Kapuku is a small developed nation and home to one of the largest economies in the mid-Hanmaric region. It is also known for its highly-developed technology sector, which makes up about 30% of the economy, as well as its rich and unique culture, which makes it a popular tourist destination with stunning landscape that has received high media coverage in recent years.

Etymology

The name "Kapuku" is derived from two words, "Kapu" and "Kū". Kapu is an ancient set of traditions and guidelines used by the people of Kapuku for hundreds of years. "Kū" means war, giving a name that means something similair to "War with rules" which gives insight into the foundation and culture of Kapuku.

First Settlement

Ancient Kapukan obsidian arrowheads
The first settlers of what is today Kapuku were a people group who originated from Eastern Tarsis. These first settlers used canoes to travel across the great Hanmaric Ocean and settled hundreds of islands along the way. These people used currents and the stars to navigate, being the first group of humans to ever develop an advanced navigation method. Every island in the region was remembered by oral tradition. Perhaps their most important settlement were the islands of Kapuku. These first settlers of Kapuku were advanced for their time. The Kapukans had developed agriculture, bringing chickens and sweet potatoes to the islands. Large farms were created the the basis of civilization were formed. One group of Kapukans on the South-Western side of Limoni turned into a major and the largest settlement in Kapuku, Ūtē'mitoi. These peoples used the resources of the many volcanoes around the islands to make basic tools for construction, agriculture, and fighting.

Kingdom of Limoni

The first ever developed and vast kingdom of the islands of Kapuku was the Kingdom of Limoni. The kingdom got its start with the city of Ūtē'mitoi, an ancient settlement founded by some of the first Kapukan settlers. The settlement consisted of many houses and tents, with canals between them for canoes and out-riggers. As mentioned before, these people developed the first "advanced" tools ever to been seen on Limoni. With this advantage, the kingdom was able to greatly expand across the island battle tactics advanced. By 457 AC, Ūtē'mitoi controlled all of the island of Limoni. In honor of this, the island was renamed after the ancient Mitoi god, Limoni. The kingdom continued to expand to the other smaller islands around Limoni but was never able to actually land on any major islands with their underdeveloped navy. To combat this, the kingdom focused on naval and army development. This led to the development of the double out-rigger canoe, a set of two large canoes with a large platform on top and a sail for extra speed. These new ship not only helped warfare, but helped settle new lands. Using these new ships, Limoni was able to conquer both Ulukau and Hulawa. But this vast empire did not last, political instability lead to the collapse of the empire and the division of the kingdom into three others, Ulukau, Limoni, and Hulawa.

The Four Kingdoms

These three kingdoms would exist in constant war for decades. Failed invasions and death were commonplace, divisions in the islands were as well. in 618 AC, the kingdom of Hulawa conquered the mostly tribal island of Haumea. This territory and resources gave Hulawa a large upper-hand. Hulawa used this as an opportunity to invade its neighboring island of Limoni. The initial invasion was successful and warriors of Hulawa landed on Limoni. Dismayed by the military success of Hulawa, Ulukau decided to send warriors to support Limoni. This was one of the few times any peace was seen between two of the kingdoms. The warriors of Ulukau and Limoni killed the king of Hulawa in battle. This lead to a division of Hulawa between the king's two sons, forming the kingdoms of Hulawa and Haumea. Still having warriors in Limoni, Ulukau attempted the kill the king of Limoni, leading to the resuming of the war between the two kingdoms. The four kingdoms would continue to fight for another 300 years until the arrival of the first Zhenian merchants. Death aside, the four kingdom's constant fighting led to some good such as major technological advancements like the invention of the dagger and the invention of the sail.

Meakhani's Kingdom

The arrival of the first Zhenian traders in 997 AC brought chaos to Kapuku. Minor disease outbreaks caused civil unrest throughout the Kingdoms of Ulukau and Limoni. The introduction of weapons such as rifles and cannons made the preexisting wars between the islands even more bloody. Many worried of a Zhenian conquering of the islands with their superior army and navy. The Kingdom of Hulawa was able to avoid most of the chaos and unrest that the other three kingdoms faced and focused and arming themselves. The king of Hulawa, Meakhani, took this change to invade the Kingdom of Huamea. The kingdom overwhelmed the mostly traditionally armed kingdom of Huamea, wiping out their entire army and eventually capturing their king. 3 years later, the bloodiest battle of the war would start where the more-modernly armed Kingdom of Limoni was defeated by Meakhani's forces. The war would last 2 years and cost 46,000 lives. A period of relative peace would follow with the Kapuku's population growing and technology advancing. The period of peace also resulted in the major expansion of many cities, the most notable being the city of Lono. In 113 AC, the Shindan dynasty established the colony Ulukau (Known in Zhenia as the West Koyoan Islands), sparking an invasion of Ulukau by Meakhani. The invasion was slightly successful at first, but quickly started to fail as the Zhenians swept through the islands. In 1130 AC, the other three islands of Kapuku were officially incorporated into the West Kokoyan Islands.

Administrative divisions

Kapuku is divided into three categories of subdivisions, regions, moku, and ali'li. There are four regions, Ulukau, Limoni, Hulawa, and Huamea. Regions are responsible for broad law and budget of the moku, as well as education and other services. The regions are further divided into 16 Moku each (Limoni being split into 17). The Moku are in charge of local laws budget as well as judicial and other matters. The Moku are even further split into 17 Ali'li. Ali'li are in charge of education and smaller budget matters. The Moku and Ali'li all elect governors every 6 years. The Moku have a small 17 seat council made up of local representatives from the Ali'li, which decide on local laws. Both the Moku and Ali'li elect officials to their respective houses in the Legislature of Kapuku. There are a total of 65 Moku and 275 Ali'li in Kapuku.

Climate

Kapuku is split into about 5 climate zones. The coasts of Kapuku see mostly rainforest and small areas of monsoon type climates. Further inland, mainly oceanic and mediterranean climates are present. Around Kapuku's many volcanos, tundra-like climates can be observed. Temperatures in Kapuku rarely exeed 28.9°C and rarely drop below 18.3°C. Kapuku's climate is one of the most consistent in the world with the highest temperature ever recorded only being 37.8°C and the lowest temperature only reaching −9 °C. Rainfall inside of Kapuku varies per island with parts of Limoni geting as much as 460 inches of rain per year. This makes Limoni one of the rainiest locations on Themys.

There are two main languages spoken by the people of Kapuku, Kapukan (Which is the official language) and Zhenian (The only designated minority language. As the mother tongue of over 70% of Kapuku's population, Kapukan has been a predominant language in Kapukan society, both formal and informal. There are various dialects of Kapukan, mostly varying between islands. On the island of Ulukau you would say "Halela" while in standard Kapukan you would say "Hale". Inside of Kapuku the Kapukan Alphabet is used which acts the official script for all Kapukan writing and litterature. The Korelo Script is also used by a minority of Kapukans. The latter script was introduced as an alternative to the Kapukan script after the 1946 coup as it was heavely Zhenian influenced. The Korelo Script fell out of use in the 1950s and 1960s as more and more rights were given to the Zhenian peoples inside of Kapuku.

Cuisine

A Kapukan dish consisting of chicken cooked with pineapple, rice, and mango.
Kapukan cuisine varies from island to island but mostly consists of rice, fruits and vegetables, chicken or fish, and a pudding. Kapukan rice is usually steamed and served as a side dish along with pudding and various fruits. More ethnically Kapukan regions tend to be heavier on fish, fruits, pudding, and vegetables. More Zhenian areas tend to eat more traditionally Zhenian food, sometimes including pork. Fruits are commonly cooked into rice, with the main fruits being mangos and coconuts. Haupia, more commonly known as Kapukan Pudding, is the most common pudding in Kapukan cuisine. The pudding is made with coconut milk, sugar, salt, and a starch, which is then left to gelatinize. Haupia is most commonly served in Kapukan majority areas. The most common vegetable served are sweet potatoes, usually being served with chicken or fish or as a side dish. Coconuts, mangos, and pineapples are the most commonly served fruits as well as kiwi, passion fruit, and sometimes dragonfruit. A large portion of Kapukan dishes are served with fish, the most common species being Yellowfin Tuna and Mahi Mahi. The fish is usually served raw alongside the aforementioned fruits and vegetables. Chicken is the most common livestock meat and is most commonly served with sweet potatoes and cooked with pineapples. Drinks mostly include juices, teas, and coffees, with juices being the most popular. Pineapple and mango juices are the most common, with coffee mixed with coconut milk coming in close second. Popular teas include TBD,TBD and, TBD, mostly being served in Zhenian majority regions.
